Troubleshooting
A list of what you may see and what to do about it. Messages are quoted as the product shows them.
Signing in#
| You see |
What to do |
| The email or the password does not match. |
Check the email and the password. If you forgot the password, press Forgot password. |
| This link does not work |
The invitation to HotLayout was already used, revoked or has expired (seven days). Ask for a new one with Get access on hotlayout.com. |
| Too many attempts in a row. The storage rejects them for now — wait a minute. |
Wait a minute and try again. |
| The email is still not confirmed. Open the link in the email first. |
Open the link from the email first. No email — press Send the email again and check spam. |
| No access to this organization |
You are signed in with an account that is not a member. Check the account, or ask an admin of the organization for an invitation. |
| An invitation cannot be opened |
It is for a different email, it has expired (seven days) or it was already used. Ask for a new one. |
In the editor#
| You see |
What to do |
| A widget in the palette is dimmed |
It cannot go into the selected place. Hover to read why; select another container or drag the widget where it fits. |
| A red message under a field |
The value is not accepted — the message says what is expected. The document is not published until it is fixed. |
| Add translation on the canvas |
The text has no translation in the language you are viewing. Add it in Languages, or leave it — the app shows the source text. |
| A text is cut off or a block is missing in the preview |
Check the device and the data state of the preview: on a narrow phone and with no data, screens look different. |
| The vertical alignment does nothing |
The container has no free height. Set a height or a minimum height in its style. |
| The editor needs more room |
The window is narrower than 600 px. Widen it. |
| Could not open the document |
The draft could not be read. Check the connection and press Try again; nothing was changed. |
| A notice that the document was saved for an earlier format |
The document is shown converted to the current format, and nothing is lost. The stored draft takes the new form with your first edit; publish it again so that current apps can read it. |
Saving#
| You see |
What to do |
| Not saved |
Read the reason under it. With no connection, saving retries by itself — keep the tab open. You can also press Save now. |
| “someone else saved this document after you opened it” |
A teammate saved first. Choose Open their version or Keep mine — see When two people edit. |
| Not saving |
The draft is not being saved. Either you have view-only access, or the document was imported from a file that belongs to another document — export it and import it into its own document. |
Publishing#
| You see |
What to do |
| The Publish button is grey |
Read the bar at the bottom of the editor — see Why the Publish button is grey. |
| Your role does not allow publishing. Ask an admin or a publisher of the organization. |
Ask an admin or a publisher to publish, or to give you the role. |
| The trial has ended. Documents and the theme cannot be published for now; you can keep editing — drafts are saved. |
See Trial and licence. |
| A message that the document uses theme tokens apps do not have yet |
Publish the theme first, then the document — see The theme. |
| Someone else saved this document. Choose which version to keep before publishing. |
Choose a version in the bar, then publish. |
| Published, but the app shows the old screen |
Check the status in the list of documents: it should say Live. Then open the prototype — if the prototype is right, the question is for your developers: how the app loads the document, and whether it is the same project and document ID. |
| Not delivered in the webhook deliveries |
The document is published, but your backend did not receive it. Pass the reason from the row to your developers. |
Theme and data#
| You see |
What to do |
| “The theme has changes that exist only on this screen: a theme is not saved automatically. Publish it in the Design section or export it to a file — otherwise they are gone when you leave.” |
Press Publish the theme in the Design section, or export the theme to a file. |
| “Not published: someone else published the theme after you opened it. Their set may hold tokens that published documents already use.” |
Choose whether to open their theme or to publish yours over it. |
| An error about an unknown data path |
The field is no longer in the data dictionary. Choose another field for the widget, or return the path to the dictionary. |
| The dictionary cannot be read |
The saved dictionary of the project is damaged, and documents are not opened until it is fixed. An owner or an admin opens the dictionary and saves a correct one. |
Images#
| You see |
What to do |
| This file is not a PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG image. The check reads the file itself, so renaming it does not help. |
Upload a PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG file. |
| The file is too large: the limit is 2 MB. Reduce or compress the image. |
Reduce or compress the image. |
| An SVG is refused |
The message names the reason. Export it again as plain SVG with a viewBox, simplify it, or use PNG. |
| New files cannot be added while publishing is off for this organization. |
The trial or the licence has ended — see Trial and licence. |
Still stuck#
Write to contact@hotlayout.com. Say which organization and document it is about, what you did and what message you saw — the exact text helps.
